Verticutting

Verticutting is the removal of grass growth which is horizontal, along with stolons and debris to produce a clean, fresh, well ventilated surface as the ideal environment for healthy growth. The soil surface will not be touched during this action

The "finer" species you have will be of a creeping growth habit ie stolons, rhizomes etc so some kind of "cleaning out" programme is required as they are excessive thatch producers

Never Cut Below 5mm on your green or you will start to loose the food stored in the plant and it will die and not re produce.

  • Grass species.
    - Creeping bent can be a big thatch producer and requires regular coring or top-dressing to dilute the thatch.
    - Fescues produce thatch which has a high lignin content that takes longer to break down naturally.
  • Nutrition.
    - Excessive N can produce a grass factory. Thatch is therefore produced faster than it can break down naturally.
